Picking Up Martial Arts in The New Year

It’s not just gyms that will be full in January

I did a gi review for folks looking to start doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ)in 2024. It was for the Elite Sports “core” model, a great starter gi for folks beginning their BJJ journey this year. If you want to check it out, you can here.

Then, after that, I got an alert on Quora asking, “Do you like martial arts? What style, and why would one choose the style you do?”

I assumed the person asking, is asking because they want to start training in 2024 but they aren’t sure where to start. I remember when I was in my early teens, working on getting my driver's license thumbing through the Yellow Pages to find martial arts schools I could get to once I started driving. There were Kendo schools, a few Aikido schools, lots of Tae Kwon Do and karate.

The funny thing was, I found a kickboxing school I could walk to after all that research.

But the Quora question made me think, the asker is probably at that same point. They want to start something and they want to do it correctly. So, here’s what I responded with to, “Do you like martial arts? What style, and why would one choose the style you do?”

No, I don’t like martial arts, I love martial arts.

I’ve loved martial arts most of my life and have trained and practiced various arts for 30+ years (and counting!).

The one I do now is Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ). Before that, Ishin-ryu karate for 11 years and I’ve also done American kickboxing, Aikido, and very basic arnis/kali (stick-fighting). I did them because I wanted to learn as much as I could for as long as my body would allow me to handle the training for it.

In my late 20s going into my early 30s, I was doing both BJJ and karate simultaneously and unfortunately, not very intelligently. In one month, I managed to sprain both ankles and then tear my groin. The groin injury affected my mobility and I put on a lot of weight…
