New UFC Gloves Should Lessen Eye Pokes

It’s about time the UFC caught up, but Bellator was there first

The UFC announced they would be using new gloves in the next quarter of 2024, starting with UFC 302 in Newark, New Jersey. When the news first broke the forefront of the announcement came with a lot of big corporate PR mumbo jumbo. The partnered companies they worked with to make them, the colors associated with their program, and very little about what the gloves will address.

The reactions from most people seeing the news included, “Will we see less eye pokes?” It was my knee-jerk reaction as well.

The answer is, yes they do but the UFC didn’t do a great job about letting us know that, so I wrote about it over at MyMMANews. You can read that below, but I wanted to add better gloves were already available in 2014 and Bellator MMA has been using them, right up until the sale of the company last year.

The Powerelock MMA Fight Glove from Everlast was announced towards the end of Bjorn Rebney’s run as president of Bellator MMA. Scott Coker took over after Rebney but the gloves were a new design meant to address eye pokes, lacerations, and most of what we see in MMA.
