Is Trash-talking Ruining Boxing and MMA, or Getting Better?

The line is thin these days when it comes to trash talk and how far you can take.

It makes for a good storyline to sell a fight to fans, but as fans become more sensitive these days, certain subjects should probably be avoided. When you look at the whole thing with Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, McGregor found out during the fight that insulting a man’s wife and religion would be something he would pay for, and did pay for in that fight.

Nurmagomedov event went on record as to say, if they run into each other he would still fight him for the things he said, regardless of any legal action that would come afterward. When it gets like that, that’s worse.

I think fans watching should take into account, especially in combat sports that not every competitor mentally prepares the same way. Some are content just competing and avoiding media altogether, but the business side is what makes them have to say and do things to build up hype for the fight.

It’s fun when it’s fun, but when it gets bad it can be ugly like the whole McGregor/Nurmagomedov thing. It’s not necessary though, look at this weekend’s boxing match with Heather Hardy and Amanda Serrano. Those two are both from Brooklyn, both well-established boxers and friends outside of the ring.
